Internship Post 8
Dates: 7/11/17 - 7/13/17
Activities: CTG / NAF intern event
Technical Information: none
Reflection: The days pass slower than before, what with the only project left being the main project of updating the Intranet pages and having no content to upload. The intern event was Tuesday. It started in the Hero Room behind the cafeteria at about 9:30. I arrived at around that time (possibly later) and because it was in building 8 whereas I work at building 1, I had no idea where I was going. I waited for my fellow intern and fellow AOIT classmate, Scott, and another intern, Dymir, before heading in.
The Hero Room was already packed with interns, students and adults alike, and the event started by taking NAF interns to tour a lab. We walked to building 7 and went to the Work Station & Performance Lab which showcased cool tech including VR and hardware for stations etc. Then we returned to building 8 for another tour in Green Solutions Center, which was hardware maintenance (?) and servers. Afterwards, we returned to the Hero Room and heard a presentation on DCG Overview. Then executive Tom introduced himself and Laura before lunch, which was assorted burrito things. After lunch was the most important event of my entire life! Not really, maybe most important of my Lenovo career. Maybe not even that. After lunch was intern introductions. There were about 50+ interns total, made up of high school, wake tech, and college students. About 12 wake tech, 26 high school, and 16 college. It was nerve wracking because I have never been good at presenting in front of people but the intros were only a few seconds long, 30 seconds max for me. It was fun hearing about all the other interns though and I really enjoyed the day so far. Then an intern Shantal came to talk about her intern collaboration project which was basically a spaceship (apollo 11?) "blasting off" and the spaceship would be a birdhouse and the exhaust emissions would be rocks that us interns and our managers decorate with colors and a quote. It's a pretty cool idea and super creative and I think tomorrow they make the birdhouse and mon/tues we decorate the rocks. Not sure which building it will be at but I'm looking forward to the end product nonetheless. We all gathered for a group picture; one large one with all interns, and one smaller pic with just NAF interns. The event officially ended with executive Laura having a closing talk and open to questions, but after her talk we all went to tour the front of building 8 which concluded the event at around 2:45. It was a super fun day and I really enjoyed spending time with the other interns and seeing more to Lenovo itself.
This internship has really taught me a lot in terms of technological skills and soft skills. Its also really made me question my previous career aspirations. Like I mentioned in a post before, I'm torn between a profession in the medical field vs. web/multimedia jobs. I just want a job that can help people and a job that I won't absolutely loathe. As for which field that is, I still don't know.
